Although these English phrases can be the translations of 執生, they are different, strictly speaking.
"Play it by ear" and "improvise" mean "decide what to do as the situation develops or when something spontaneously". They conveys the feeling or connotation of 執生 as in Cantonese. Nevertheless, "off-the-cuff" is mainly used in the context of remarks, speeches and comments.
